We talk a lot about hiking, diving and paragliding at XShot, so let’s explore other ways to enjoy being outside, like true Californian that we are…
New outdoor activities might intimidate you at first, but once you give them a try, you just may find your new form of exercise, adventure or passion. So what are some new outdoor activities you can do on your own time? Here’s a look at a few that have grown in popularity in recent years.
Disc Golf
Disc golf has become a popular pastime as of late, even though the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) was founded back in 1976. For many new frisbee throwers, they find the disc goes wherever it wants, but once you practice and learn control, disc golf is an addictive — and free — sport you can play with friends. It may seem like a niche, but disc golf is a multi-million dollar industry, one that supports professional athletes and national competitions with huge cash prizes and even a national tour.
Stand-Up Paddleboarding
Stand-up paddleboards have grown in popularity in recent years. The serenity you find on calm days can relax the tension of a busy schedule and help you leave stress behind, all while enjoying a close and intimate view of marine life and seascapes.
Whether you’re a paddleboard novice or pro, there are some safety tips you should always follow. First, wear a flotation device (or at least have one on the board) and leash your board. If the climate or water is on the cold side, consider wearing a wet suit. Talk to other paddleboarders about what thickness of wet suit they recommend for your area before making a purchase.
Being on the water means intense reflection, so protect your eyes with a good pair of sunglasses. If you’re inexperienced paddleboarder and worried you might spend more time in the water than on it, consider Croakies retainers to keep from losing your shades.
When you’re ready to hit the water, consider taking lessons from an instructor before heading out on your own. Not only can they teach you the correct techniques, but correct your form and style on the fly. If you don’t opt for an instructor, there are many websites with tips and tricks that can show you the basics.
Cycling Tours
While bicycling is a great, low-impact exercise, it can also provide the platform for many an adventure. Cycle tours have finally entered popular culture as a legitimate way in which to travel and see the world. A tour can last a few days, several months or years, depending on your preference. Cycle tourists aren’t super athletes and many aren’t in pristine physical shape before they embark on their adventure. Of course, being in good shape before you hit the road will decrease the physical hardship for the first couple weeks of travel.
Cycle touring may be more accessible now than ever before, but some specialized gear is still required, such as sturdy, steel bicycle racks, watertight panniers and reliable rain gear.
