Save the mermaids was founded by Kate nelson, Jordan Lerum and Jaclyn smith In Santa Barbara California during their work on the campaign to Ban or tax plastic bags in major grocery stores and pharmacies. Their mission was to educate people about the global issue of plastic pollution in a fresh and creative way. One of the main things that inspired them to take action was when they learned about The Great Pacific Trash Gyre, A whirlpool of trash in between Hawaii and California that weighs 3.5 million tons and covers an area twice the size of Texas. 80 % of the mass of the Trash Gyre is plastic. Guest Post by Robin Fisher “Since the beginning this incredible journey over a month ago we have been greeted with an outpouring of enthusiasm and receptiveness towards our campaign. Every city we travel to has given us an opportunity to educate and enrich the lives of the people we meet. We have been pleasantly surprised by the amount of people we have had the opportunity to educate, but even more surprised by the amount we learned and how we were inspired by all the people we have met. In an effort to document all this valuable information we are keeping interview videos, journals , and video blogs. Since there are only a few of us, and obviously no camera crew, our XShot has been an awesome tool for filming with our flip cam and taking photos of all of us with. Since there was still no solution for cleaning up the trash gyre Kate and the girls wanted to find a way to educate other people about the gyre and spread awareness. They felt like being informed had changed the way they viewed the world and they wanted to educate other people in the same way. This prompted Kate and Jordan to film and produce their own Public Service Announcement and to start work on a documentary about the great pacific trash gyre and the consequences of single use plastic. Save the Mermaids logoTo help spread information and educate as many people as possible Kate, Jaclyn, and Jordan enlisted the help of Robin fisher, China Cisney, Gail Kvistad and Lillian Stanton. These 7 girls have become the back bone of save the mermaids. Currently Kate, Robin, China and Lillie are traveling through central and South America spreading awareness about the trash gyre and researching waste management in all the places they visit. They are hoping to establish a global network of people who are dedicated to solving the pollution problems in their communities. We are hoping that this network will help people collaborate and share ideas and solutions on how to deal with trash and pollution. Some of the strategies we have been using to establish this global network while we travel are to organize beach clean ups and school presentations as well as meeting with local environmental authorities and activists.” More on Save the Mermaids in the Examiner.com
